16 Jul 2010

Yelena is delighted to have been invited to take part in next week’s official ceremony to light the Olympic flame for the forthcoming Youth Olympic Games. Yelena will join IOC President Jacques Rogge and several other members of the IOC for the ceremony at the spiritual home of the Olympics at Olympia in Greece on Friday, July 23. Stay tuned in to www.olympic.org/yog and watch for yourselves!

The Youth Olympic Games are being staged in Singapore from August 14 to 26 and Yelena is one of three ambassadors along with American swimmer Michael Phelps and Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt. A high-level sporting event for young people, supported by fun culture and education activities, the Youth Olympic Games also act as a catalyst in these fields throughout the Olympic Movement.

Yelena said: “What an honor it is for me to participate in the first Youth Olympic Games as a Role Model Ambassador and helping the next generation of athletes and future stars is something that I have fully embraced from the beginning.
“I am really looking forward to my time in Singapore next month as well as my trip to Olympia next week as it is the birthplace of the Olympics. It will surely be a remarkable experience for me, not only as an Olympian but also for me personally growing up and reading about the Olympics and the history of this place. I can hardly wait to actually get to see it for myself and be present during the official ceremony to light the Olympic flame at the Temple of Hera – it really is a huge honour for me.”

Yelena is planning to keep her fans fully updated on events in the run-up to, as well as during the Singapore Youth Olympic Games. She added: “I hope all of you following my website and Facebook fan page. I will continue to post updates while I am in Singapore next month! You can also follow the YOG Facebook page for all the latest news and updates.”
