Yelena’s Moment in History
23 Jul 2010Yelena today attended a special ceremony at Olympia in Greece when the Olympic torch was lit for the forthcoming Youth Olympic Games.
Yelena, one of three Youth Olympic Games ambassadors, joined IOC President Jacques Rogge and several other members of the IOC for the torch lighting event at the spiritual home of the Olympics.
She was delighted to be present at such a huge occasion and said: “It is such an honour to be here and see history happening before my eyes.”
The first ever Youth Olympic Games are being staged in Singapore from August 14 to 26 and Yelena joins American swimmer Michael Phelps and Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt as official ambassador.
A sporting event for young people, balancing sport, culture and education, the Youth Olympic Games also act as a catalyst in these fields throughout the Olympic Movement.
