Yelena pleased with 2010 Debut

18 Feb 2010

Yelena delighted a large crowd at the 19th Russian Winter meeting in Moscow – even though she just missed out on setting a new indoor world record.

The meeting, staged at Moscow’s Indoor Central Army Club Arena, attracted a good quality line-up of athletes who put on a good display.

However, the majority of the crowd seemed to have come to see if Yelena could set her 28th world record at the meeting, which ranked as the fourth of the nine-event IAAF Indoor Permit series.

And while there wasn’t a new world record, Yelena certainly did her best to start the new season in real style.

She made three attempts in all to raise the indoor world best mark of 5.00m she set last year in Donetsk, but had to settle for a winning clearance of 4.85m – achieved with her very first jump of the day!

Yelena failed twice at 5.01m – though she was very close to success with her first vault – before raising the bar to 5.02m and also missing out.

European indoor champion Yuliya Golubchikova took the runners-up sport with a leap of 4.70m while former world record holder Svetlana Feofanova, who is just returning from injury, achieved 4.60m for third place.

Yelena said: “I’ll concentrate on two competitions, first the Pole Vault Stars in Donetsk (6 March) and the World Indoor Championships in Doha (March 12-14). Then I’ll start to get prepared for the European Championships in Barcelona and the Continental Cup.”
