Yelena can’t wait for Moscow event

03 Feb 2010

Yelena is feeling fit and healthy and raring to get back to competitive action at the Moscow Winter Meeting.

She kicks off her 2010 season in front of her home fans at the big indoor event in the Russian capital on February 7 – and she can’t wait for what should be an exhilarating experience.

Yelena said: “I am very much looking forward to competing and performing before all my friends and so many supporters in Moscow. It has been a long time since I competed in Moscow and so it will be very special for me to go there and of course do my best.

“The Russian Winter is one of the best competitions we have in Russia and I will do anything to help support athletics in Russia.”

One of Yelena’s main ambitions is to help inspire children to take up sports, particularly athletics, and she added: “I want to support my federation and I also want to inspire and attract youth to sports, especially young kids to athletics.

“So I really hope to see lots of young kids at the competition and to give them and everyone coming to watch the competition a special memory.”

Yelena has been training hard in recent weeks and is hopeful of achieving more success this season.

She added: “I am feeling very fit and ready to compete this season. The past couple of weeks the training has been long and I am tired, but I know it’s good for me and I feel now that everything is coming together.

“I started back to serious training in December and continued with my programme through the holidays. It was difficult to keep motivated when there are so many nice things happening around Christmas and New Year, but I know the sacrifices I make now will give me back much more when it come to competing.

“All the hard work is done in this period and now it’s a matter of keeping myself healthy, fit and focused.”

Yelena has been working to a tried and tested training schedule that has served her well in recent seasons.

She said: “The programme and routine I have with Vitaliy has worked well for me, so there’s been no need to change things. We always allow ourselves to adjust in case I am not feeling well on a particular day, but generally speaking the programme is the same and I feel confident that Vitaliy and I know what works best for me.”

She is now firmly focused on the three indoor competitions she has in her schedule – the Moscow Winter, the annual Donetsk pole vault extravaganza and the world championships in Qatar in mid-March.

Yelena said: “First of all, I want to have a healthy and successful indoor season. I have only planned a few key competitions this indoors, so I expect the best results from myself in each performance.

“After the Moscow Winter event, I will compete in Donetsk at Sergey Bubka’s Donetsk Pole-Vault All-Star competition. This is a very special pole vault-only competition for the best men and women from around the world and the atmosphere in the arena is something special.

“I always look forward to competing in Donetsk. Not only because of Sergey’s support for me over the years, but also because the competition itself is so special – there is music, large video screens, singers and performers and the crowd really supports all the athletes.

“Then I will finish the indoor season by representing Russia at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar this March.”
